Add the 1930s bungalows of the southern fringe and newer apartments near East Croydon, and loft work here spans almost every type — a compact terrace roof and a wide interwar semi need quite different handling.

The period terraces around Thornton Heath and West Croydon often have compact lofts with steep, awkward access and original insulation that has settled over decades, sometimes part-boarded in a way that compresses the wool. The huge stock of 1930s semis across Addiscombe, Shirley and Selsdon typically carries thin original material ideal for a top-up, and many have boards laid straight onto the joists for storage. Bungalows on the southern edge have large roof areas where insulation makes a real difference but can be awkward to move around. Post-war flats and new-builds raise questions about who is responsible for the roof space.
Croydon's older terraces were not built around modern ventilation, so blocking the eaves with insulation can cause condensation. We keep the eaves clear and consider airflow alongside insulation. In the many part-converted lofts of the interwar suburbs, we check whether the job is a loft floor to insulate at joist level or a room-in-roof needing a rafter-level approach. Bungalow roofs, with their large low voids, reward careful attention to airflow.
Condensation is a common complaint in poorly ventilated Croydon lofts, particularly in older terraces and flats where an extractor has been run into the roof space. We find the cause first rather than assuming insulation will cure it.
Across Croydon, access, parking and the state of any existing insulation drive cost more than location alone. Removal of old material, the roof area of larger semis and bungalows, and any boarding or ventilation work also affect the quotation.

Manchester
Spray foam applied to the underside of the roof four years earlier, removed back to bare rafters and felt. The roof timbers had come through in good condition, with no significant damage found.
Basingstoke
Mark's compact loft ran cold in winter and hot in summer. With sound floor insulation already in place, we sealed the 52m² roof pitch with SF19 SuperFOIL and kept the existing central walkway.
Bristol
Priya's low-pitched loft had multiple structural timbers that had put off any full upgrade. We cut 300mm of Knauf glass mineral wool accurately around the supports for continuous coverage without compression.

Helen's narrow Edwardian loft was awkward to work in and cold along the external wall. We insulated the 33m² floor to a full 300mm depth, retaining the side access boards and keeping the eaves clear.
