What a new loft installation involves

If your loft has never been insulated, or only has a thin, patchy layer, a full installation is usually the single most cost-effective improvement you can make to the roof. Heat rises, and a poorly insulated loft lets a large share of it escape — as much as 40% of a home’s heat can be lost through an uninsulated roof. A properly specified installation slows that loss, evens out temperatures and reduces the demand on your heating.

The work is more than rolling out material. A good installation gets the depth right, protects the parts of the loft that need to stay accessible or ventilated, and leaves the space clean and documented.

When a new installation is the right call

A first installation suits lofts that are currently uninsulated, or where the existing layer is so thin, compressed or damaged that topping up would not achieve a sensible build-up. If you already have a reasonable depth of sound insulation, a top-up may be the better route. Where the existing material is contaminated or wet, removal comes first. An assessment tells us which of these applies to your loft.

Choosing the material

Most loft-floor installations use mineral wool, but it is not the only option. We help you weigh the choices — mineral wool for value and availability, sheep wool for older, more breathable roofs, or recycled plastic for a lower-irritation, sustainable alternative. The right choice depends on the roof and the loft, not on the property age alone.

How the installation is carried out

The route into the loft and the landing below are protected before anyone goes up. We inspect the loft, check for any moisture or ventilation problems, and confirm the existing situation. Where a build-up is being added, the first layer goes between the joists and a second, thicker layer is laid across them to reduce the cold bridging through the timber.

Throughout, we keep clearances around downlights and flues, avoid blocking the eaves, insulate the cold-water tank and pipes sensibly, and make sure the loft hatch is insulated and draught-sealed. If you want to keep using part of the loft for storage, we can discuss raised loft boarding so the insulation is not crushed.

Access, safety and preparation

Lofts vary enormously. Some have generous headroom and a boarded walkway; others are cramped with awkward access, old wiring and stored belongings. We talk through what needs clearing beforehand, flag any electrical or structural points for you to consider, and never work around hazards that should be dealt with first.
