Why an inspection comes first

Good loft work starts with understanding the loft. Every one is different — a different depth of existing insulation, a different roof construction, its own quirks of ventilation, moisture and structure. A sound recommendation can only come from seeing all of that in person.

An inspection is not a formality. It is the step that decides whether you need a top-up or a full installation, whether there is a moisture problem to solve first, and whether the loft is ready for boarding. It replaces guesswork with a clear plan, and it is what a fair, accurate quotation is built on.

What an inspection covers

A thorough assessment looks at the whole space, not just the insulation.

Access and layout

The hatch, the safe route across the joists, headroom and the general usability of the loft are checked first. How you get in and move around shapes what work is practical and how it is carried out.

Existing insulation depth and condition

The current material is identified and its depth measured. For wool loft floors, 270mm is the commonly used benchmark, so the inspection shows how far short the existing layer falls and whether it is dry and sound enough to top up, or wet, crushed or contaminated and better removed. This is the difference between a simple top-up and a removal.

Moisture and ventilation

The underside of the roof, the timbers and the felt are checked for signs of condensation, mould or leaks, and the eaves are examined to see whether air is moving freely. Insulation and airflow are always judged together, because adding one without the other can cause problems — ventilation is part of the same conversation.

Structure

The joists and roof timbers are looked over for their condition and, where storage is wanted, for whether boarding is feasible and what loading is sensible.

Tanks, pipes and wiring

Cold-water tanks, pipework and cabling are noted so that pipes can be protected from freezing, tanks kept accessible, and cables treated safely once the loft is colder and insulated.

From inspection to recommendation

The point of gathering all this is to give you an honest, written recommendation. That might be a straightforward installation, a top-up over sound existing material, ventilation improvements, removal of ruined insulation, or a combination — and sometimes the honest answer is that little needs doing at all.

Alongside the recommendation comes a written quotation setting out the material, the work involved, the guarantee terms and the price. Nothing proceeds until you have that in writing and are happy with it.

What can and cannot be judged remotely

We are candid about the limits of remote assessment. A phone conversation or a couple of photographs can give a rough sense of a job and help you decide whether to book a proper look — but they cannot reliably show depth, hidden moisture, the condition of the timbers or how well the loft is ventilated.

For that reason we do not base firm recommendations or quotations on photographs alone, and we would not prescribe ventilation or moisture work from an image. Those things are decided in person. It is the fairest approach for you, because it means the quotation reflects the loft as it really is rather than an optimistic guess.
