Case study
Loft Insulation Case Study — Wide Low-Pitched Loft Insulated in Stages, Swansea
A wide, low-pitched bungalow loft that had never received a complete insulation upgrade because access was difficult. The 48m² floor was insulated in stages to a full 300mm depth, using temporary boards for safe access.
What we found
- •A wide, low-pitched roof space with limited movement near the edges
- •Several timber supports crossing the working area
- •Large areas of exposed ceiling joists
- •No effective insulation beneath the lower roof slopes
The problem
The wide loft had never received a complete insulation upgrade, mainly because the low roof pitch made access difficult. Sections towards the edges had been left untreated as a result.
The exposed floor and large perimeter meant heat was escaping across almost the entire footprint of the property.
Our assessment
The loft floor measured approximately 48m². We recommended a staged installation of 300mm Knauf glass mineral wool. Temporary boards were used to create safe working areas while the team installed 100mm between the joists and 200mm across the top.
The installation
The team began at the furthest edge and worked back towards the access point. The 100mm layer was fitted between the joists and cut around the vertical supports. Smaller sections were used in the low perimeter bays.
The 200mm layer was then cross-laid across each completed section. Temporary boards were moved as the work progressed and removed at the end. The eaves ventilation route remained open throughout.
The result
The completed loft had full-depth insulation across the wide floor area, including the previously difficult edge sections reached using temporary boards.
The installation helped to
- Improved insulation across a wide bungalow roof space
- Reduced heat loss at the ceiling line
- Improved coverage in low edge sections
- Worked safely around structural supports
- Delivered a full 300mm insulation depth
