Case study
Loft Insulation Case Study — Traditional Loft Fully Insulated From Hatch to Gable, Liverpool
A traditional brick semi-detached loft that had never been insulated, with 44m² of exposed ceiling joists. A full 300mm Knauf glass mineral wool layer was installed from the hatch to the gable wall.
What we found
- •A traditional pitched loft with exposed joists from the hatch to the gable wall
- •No continuous insulation layer across the floor
- •An older timber hatch frame that required careful edge detailing
- •Dust and loose debris within several joist bays
The problem
The loft was inspected as part of a full assessment of the roof space. It had never been upgraded, with the ceiling joists exposed across the full floor area and no insulation layer in place.
The survey confirmed that the joists were exposed across the full floor, with no insulation between or above them and nothing at the hatch trimmers.
Our assessment
The loft floor measured approximately 44m². The roof timbers and gable wall were in suitable condition, so we recommended 300mm of Knauf glass mineral wool at ceiling level. The system comprised 100mm between the joists and a 200mm cross-laid top layer.
The installation
Loose debris was removed from the joist bays before the first layer was installed. The 100mm wool was cut around the hatch trimmers and fitted closely against the timber without being compressed.
The 200mm top layer was laid at right angles to the joists, creating continuous coverage from the hatch to the gable wall. The eaves were finished carefully to preserve airflow.
The result
The finished loft had a clean and consistent 300mm layer across the full floor, continuous from the hatch through to the gable wall.
The installation helped to
- Created a continuous 300mm layer across a previously uninsulated floor
- Reduced heat loss across the full loft floor
- Improved comfort in the bedrooms
- Reduced cold bridging through the joists
- Created a cleaner and more consistent loft space
